The Weeknd was named a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations World Food Program at an official reception on Tuesday, October 7 in Los Angeles.
Hosted at Ysabel Restaurant in West Hollywood, the United Nations World Food Program board members were joined by top music executives such as the president and CEO of Universal Music Group. Lucien Grange, Chairman and CEO of Universal Music Publishing Group Jody gerson, President / CEO of Motown Records Ethiopia Habtemariam, co-responsible for urban music at Columbia Records Shawn holliday, and the director of The Weeknd Wassim “Sal” Slaby as well as his wife Rima Fakih Slaiby, who was appointed to the board of directors of the US division of WFP in April. Upon arrival, participants received a colored pin representing the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals established in 2015. The mustard yellow part, representing Goal 2, stands for “zero hunger”. The United Nations World Food Program provides lifesaving food assistance to more than 100 million people in more than 80 countries each year.
“We’re going to wake up and shake up the world and world leaders. And we need a superstar, a Super Bowl hero, to become our super hero,” said the executive director of the United Nations World Food Program . David Beasley. “We need someone like The Weeknd to help wake up the world with passion, who will come and help carry this message, wake up young people, wake up business leaders, wake up political leaders.”
